Canton, originally a Cherokee Indian Territory, was established in 1889. Canton North Carolina is the second largest town in Haywood County, which showcases 20th century architecture among its charming historical district. The newly restored Colonial Theater and Canton Historical Museum are two historical locations unique to Canton. The Colonial Theater is still used today for concerts, plays and live reading
on their vintage stage. Canton North Carolina
was named after Canton Ohio, where the steel
used to construct the bridge over Pigeon River
was from.
Canton is also home to a historic paper mill, Blue Ridge Paper Products, which is among the oldest continually operating mills in the United States. In 1997, it was announced that Champion International was being sold,
causing many employees to band together and purchase the mill, renaming it Blue Ridge Paper Products.
The Pigeon River is also located in Canton and supports the paper mill.
